Structure and Fields of TSA/BTS Entries

Each entry in TSA and BTS is organized into a series of fields. A description of these fields is provided below.
Type of publication
This field provides an indication of the type of publication in question. Choices include all or one of: Journal, Collected volume, Electronic publication or Dissertation (for TSA); Monograph, Collection of articles, Special issue of a journal (i.e., an entire issue dealing with a particular theme), or Conference proceedings (for BTS).
Category
This field selects abstracts/evalutive summaries belonging to one of these categories.
Year
This field refers to the date of publication of the work. If relevant, this field may also contain a reference to a particular edition (e.g. 1994 (2nd edition)). Searches may be limited to a specified time span (e.g. from 2001 to the present)
Source title
This field refers to the title of the source publication of individual abstracts. Only available for searches in TSA.
Author
This field refers to the author(s) of the publication abstracted.
Language
This field indicates the language in which the work is written (e.g. German). By default all languages are considered.
Title
This field refers to the title of the work. By default searches consider both original and translated title.
Keyword
This field refers to words, names and terms from the subject and name index.
Full text search
This field refers to the full text of the abstracts (TSA) or of the evalutive summaries (BTS). It does not refer to the full text of the works abstracted.
Abstracts are provided by the editor or relevant journal or collected volume, author of article, editor of TSA or independent abstractor. Click here for a list of TSA independent contributors.
Evaluative summaries are 150-word comments provided by independent contributors which are intended to act as a critical commentary on the work’s contents and its usefulness in a translation studies programme. Other information that may appear in this field could include references to other works or information relating to particular historical time periods covered by a book, etc. Click here for a list of BTS contributors.
ISBN/ISSN
This field contains the ISBN (for books) or the ISSN (for journals). These numbers are unique identifiers that can be used when ordering works from publishers. Note that there are usually different ISBN numbers for hardbacks (hb) and paperbacks (pb). There are also sometimes different ISBN numbers for different places of publication (e.g. US or Europe). These details have been provided where possible. This field is only available for searches in BTS.
Audience
This field is meant to provide an indication of the appropriate target audience for the work in question. Choices include: Undergraduate students, Postgraduate students and Academics (e.g. lecturers or researchers); where appropriate, other types of audiences may be indicated (e.g. lawyers, interpreters). A work may be deemed appropriate for more than one audience. For example, it might be relevant for senior undergraduates as well as new postgraduate students. It may be helpful to consider this field in conjunction with the field Level. This field is only available for searches in BTS.
Level
This field is intended to provide an indication of the level of treatment of the subject matter. Choices are Introductory or Advanced. Often, the works fall into one or the other of these categories; however, some works do begin with an introduction to a subject and follow through to a more advanced level. This field is only available for searches in BTS.
Relevance
This field provides an indication as to the degree of importance that a work might have for a translation or intercultural studies programme. It might be useful, for instance, to consider this field as indicating whether a work should appear on the core reading list for a course, or whether it could be considered supplementary reading. Choices include Essential and Supplementary. This field is only available for searches in BTS.
Each abstract also contains indication of page numbers for individual articles (e.g. 15-29), Internet address identifier (URL) for online publications (e.g. http://www.intralinea.it/specials/eng_open1.php?id=P103) for TSA, or the the total number of pages in the publication (e.g. 198) for BTS.
Also indicated is the name of the author of the abstract (if available) and the name of the translator, if the abstract and/or abstract title was translated into English from another language.
